What is the shelf life of an arc flash suit?

Oberon’s standard guideline is that the maximum service life is 5 years however, there are a lot of variables to consider when discussing life expectancy of Arc Flash PPE. Here are some key points to consider:

  • Plastic components including hard hats, face shields, hood lenses, adapters, etc., are recommended to be replaced at 5 years.

  • Garment life expectancy will depend on:

    • Fabric/material used: inherently FR fabric could last longer than FR treated fabric, but that’s not always true

      • Higher percentages of aramid fiber create stronger fabrics that last longer. Some varieties of inherently FR fabrics consist of non-durable blends of FR modacrylic with a small percentage of aramid fiber (sometimes no aramid at all).

    • Frequency of use: Arc Flash suits are used infrequently compared to garments worn all day, every day

    • Laundering care: Laundering at home is less abrasive compared to industrial/commercial laundering

      • Sometimes, arc flash suits are hardly ever laundered due to low frequency of use

    • Workplace exposures to chemicals, acids, etc., will affect life expectancy.

    • Storage environment: If PPE is purchased and never opened, it can remain in brand-new condition for many years

  • New PPE may have safer and more comfortable technologies: On a regular basis new and improved PPE is introduced to the market that’s safer and more comfortable than older PPE, necessitating a change to improve workplace safety conditions, culture, vibe, etc.

Oberon recommends a pre and post inspection after every use of your arc flash suit. The diagram below lists out some common things to look for when doing your evaluation.

In the end, the final determination on when to replace your suit should be a part of your established electrical safety program. Please contact your local Oberon Company representative if further assistance is needed.
